hi all, for some reason ive had a HDD hit 40 deg c early this morning, now nothing is planned to run that im aware of so i would like to find out what was going on?

console shows

Code:
Dec 11 00:00:00 LTbowers newsyslog[73723]: logfile turned over due to size>100K
Dec 11 00:00:00 LTbowers syslog-ng[1750]: Configuration reload request received, reloading configuration;
Dec 11 05:12:06 LTbowers smartd[70043]: Device: /dev/ada0, Temperature 40 Celsius reached critical limit of 40 Celsius (Min/Max 33/40!)
Dec 11 05:42:05 LTbowers smartd[70043]: Device: /dev/ada0, Temperature 40 Celsius reached critical limit of 40 Celsius (Min/Max 33/40)

current show of HDD temp is
Code:
[root@LTbowers] ~# smartctl -a /dev/ada0 | grep empe
194 Temperature_Celsius 0x0022 112 102 000 Old_age Always - 35
[root@LTbowers] ~# smartctl -a /dev/ada1 | grep empe
194 Temperature_Celsius 0x0022 108 103 000 Old_age Always - 35
[root@LTbowers] ~# smartctl -a /dev/ada2 | grep empe
190 Airflow_Temperature_Cel 0x0022 066 058 045 Old_age Always - 34 (Min/Max 27/36)
194 Temperature_Celsius 0x0022 034 042 000 Old_age Always - 34 (0 13 0 0 0)
[root@LTbowers] ~# smartctl -a /dev/ada3 | grep empe
194 Temperature_Celsius 0x0022 107 100 000 Old_age Always - 36

tried looking through logs in /var/log/ but if iim honest im not sure which logs to look at so check most.

from what i can work out the reporting graphs show disc activity on ada0 as minimal, for about 2 minutes at 03:10 9kb/s read only. but nothing near 06:00

Scrubs run on a monday. there are no snapshots i believe that run, only snapshot is on a different pool to this one containing ada0.

Only cron job setup is on ada2 smart short test today at 03:00 which at 03:00 all drive had some activity, ada2 hit nearly 3mb/s again read only but so did the other drive in that pool ada3 yes ada0 and ada1 in another pool hit 9kb/s read only.

I do have 2 plugins of transmission and Plex.

this is the only drive which got to the temp. Its mounted either bottom of the 4 HDD or one up cant remember, so its not getting heat from the other drives or peripherals. between midnight and 07:00 there is no additional room heating etc. so im struggling to see why the drive would heat up.

Any advise please?

5'C is a fairly large temperature deviation and that shouldn't result from just drive activity. Consider checking the fans you have contributing to that drive's cooling, and/or reconsider your strategy for cooling. Ideally you do not want to stack drives closely together, and want airflow to be able to surround them.

I have them in a 4 bay icydock caddy, it has a fan on the back which draws air over the discs, fairly new arctic fan which I replaced and can just feel draw from the front. no real obstetrical in front. all fans flow front to back. and have a front/side vents to elevate any unwanted vacuum / restrictions. just dont know why, been ok since with no use.

latest temp
Code:
[root@LTbowers] ~# smartctl -a /dev/ada0 | grep empe
194 Temperature_Celsius 0x0022 114 102 000 Old_age Always - 33
[root@LTbowers] ~# smartctl -a /dev/ada1 | grep empe
194 Temperature_Celsius 0x0022 109 103 000 Old_age Always - 34
[root@LTbowers] ~# smartctl -a /dev/ada2 | grep empe
190 Airflow_Temperature_Cel 0x0022 067 058 045 Old_age Always - 33 (Min/Max 27/36)
194 Temperature_Celsius 0x0022 033 042 000 Old_age Always - 33 (0 13 0 0 0)
[root@LTbowers] ~# smartctl -a /dev/ada3 | grep empe
194 Temperature_Celsius 0x0022 108 100 000 Old_age Always - 35

Are all the drives the same model? I find it a little strange that ada2 is the only one that has SMART field 190.

Nah, in Ipswich it was labouring. Very good one!

Got another reported 40.....

Code:
Dec 11 18:12:06 LTbowers smartd[70043]: Device: /dev/ada0, Temperature 40 Celsius reached critical limit of 40 Celsius (Min/Max 33/40)

Again upto an hour before nothing on the disk activity?

Unfortunately not yet. Getting there...ada2 is a seagate. Infact ada0 is the bottom drive and is a wd green. Next one to be replaced when funds allow.....

I'm far enough from ipswich to not be effected by "labouring" :).

Could it be a faulty drive/reporting?

Seems like greens can run hot? Dispite the idea of being "green"! Could it be just a drive trait?

Considering I monitored the drives a bit this evening (after 22:00) while test playing a film off the pool continuing ada0 and no real change maybe 1 degree.

And again.....
Code:
Dec 12 03:12:05 LTbowers smartd[70043]: Device: /dev/ada0, Temperature 40 Celsius reached critical limit of 40 Celsius (Min/Max 33/40)
Dec 12 03:42:05 LTbowers smartd[70043]: Device: /dev/ada0, Temperature 40 Celsius reached critical limit of 40 Celsius (Min/Max 33/40)
Dec 12 04:12:06 LTbowers smartd[70043]: Device: /dev/ada0, Temperature 40 Celsius reached critical limit of 40 Celsius (Min/Max 33/40)
Dec 12 04:42:05 LTbowers smartd[70043]: Device: /dev/ada0, Temperature 40 Celsius reached critical limit of 40 Celsius (Min/Max 33/40)

Only disc activity is at just gone 03:00 for a few minutes at most, 9kb/s read? And again this was 9kb/s on all drives as well. And even weirder is that it's exactly 40 degrees not 41 or 42?

This is why I would like some form of temp graph or gui temp display from the webgui so I could see if it's just a blip and most of the time the drive is at 35. I don't see or think it's an issues just seems weird why it does what it does.

I made a script to display CPU and drives temps if you want, look at the link "Useful Scripts" in my signature :)

You can put it in a loop with a sleep of 10 min and redirect the output to a file so you'll have a log of the temp every 10 min for example ;)

no it was the actual drive temp too. i checked when i has it happen once, since then it has gone up to 41. i can only assume its the drive, its the only drive doing it, and its due to be replaced - when i can!
