What controls the retention of reporting data?

I notice every month at month end all reporting history before month end is deleted. So, right now as an example on Apr 5, I only see back to beginning of April 1. I can change the reporting to any period I want, say monthly, and it's merely empty before the previous month end. I want at least a year of data.
