Hi,

I have shucked two WD Red 12TB (WD120EFAX) from a WD My Book Duo I got for 520 EUR.

These two drive will be replacing the two old 4TB drives in my FreeNAS Server as internal backup.

Now I am wondering if I could use these old 4TB drives as external Backup in this WD My Book Duo USB case,
since I am out of SATA connectors and it also gives the possibility to detach these external backup drives?

Greetings
Frank

Watch out for reliability (the USB to SATA chip is likely to burn out in a short amount of time), but it can be done.

You will likely also not be able to address those disks independently, so a definite no on being able to trust that storage, but if it's only a backup, there's a chance it could save you one day...

Personally I wouldn't do that as it's going to be temporary, so not too useful in the long run.
