I had been using an older version of FreeNAS for years and my volume sleeps after 5 minutes. Since upgrading for 9.2 it never sleeps anymore. I have read that syslog now logs to my disks now and that's why it's not sleeping. I can see something accessing the disks every so often even with the network disconnected.

All I want is my disks to spin down when not in use like they have always done

Is there a simple way to turn off syslog to my volume or can I disable it completely? Is this even what might be preventing my volume from sleeping?

Yes.. I believe if you don't have it in 9.2.x then upgrade (9.2.1.2) and the option to chose whether to log to disk exists.. In "Settings>Advanced".. I missed it in the release logs and asked in the forums aswell..

If you have jails setup on the hard drives, that also could be keeping your drives spinning.

Have no Jails. Also looks like Jail root has not been set yet.

Upgrading to 9.2.1.2 did it, unchecked the "use system dataset for syslog" option. Thank you.

Not sure where syslog goes now but since it's not keeping my power hungry drives active they spin down as expected.
