I was looking into using FreeNAS for my next home NAS. The main reason being with 2TB+ drives I need RAID 6 and windows doesn't support that. Plus I like the option of snapshots and ZFS integrity design. The problem is I greatly want a windows server for various reason. So I assumed the best way to go about that would be have FreeNAS as the host system with a virtual windows on it. I came across http://forums.freenas.org/showthread.php?434-Virtulal-box-on-Freenas which apparently doing this is uncommon and isn't really even supported. I also found http://sourceforge.net/apps/phpbb/freenas/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=5466 which seems like its not too bad doing this on FreeNAS 7, but I'd rather use the newer 8. I saw many posts about having FreeNAS as the virtual, but unless I am missing something wouldn't it not have direct access to all of the disks. So first off would FreeNAS being the virtual have access to all the disks somehow? If not then am whats the best way to go about running a virtual of Windows Server within FreeNAS 8? From what I read I would need to install FreeBSD and just install the FreeNAS componets, but is that easily done? This is a personal home NAS so having a bunch of stuff running isn't going to even come close to affecting the performance of this system.
