Using single optane drive for VM storage, looking for any optimization advice

I have an existing TrueNAS build that is used for desktop file storage via SMB. I'm in process of building out a VMware lab of mini nodes and wanted to re-use my existing NAS for VM storage via NFS/ISCSI if at all possible, but it only has a single M.2 slot left. All SATA ports are used by spinning rust disks (and a satadom for boot). I figured the best option was to just buy an optane drive, but all the advice around here is for using optane as SLOG rather than as a standard drive.

1. Any particular options I should set for this single drive optane pool? I assume with an optane sync is as fast as async? What about recordsize?
2. Is fragmentation going to cause issues with optane? If I use ISCSI I'd prefer to allocate as much of the drive as possible for use.
3. Does any of this really apply to my situation: https://www.truenas.com/community/threads/the-path-to-success-for-block-storage.81165/

Specs:
C3558
64GB ECC DDR4
4 x 10TB HGST
1 x 64GB Innodisk SATADOM
1 x 960GB Optane 905P
10Gb Mellanox NIC
