Hello Everyone,
This is a strange questions and I am not sure where to begin. Can someone tell me how to copy .avi files to my Freenas device? I have set up plexmedia server to handle all of the media storage duties on my home network. However, when ever I tried to copy an .avi file onto the server I get an error message saying that I need permission to copy the file.

The interesting part is that the problem does not seem to be a problem with the permissions of my volume or my dataset. I have been able to copy other files (other video formats, folders, coverart, etc) to the server no problem and then stream them to my DLNA devices or the plex home theater app. I can even convert my.avi file to a different format and then have no problem copying it to the server.

My desktop is a windows 8 machine and I am running Freenas 9.2.1.

I am not sure where to go with this. Am I missing something?

Thanks.

Need more info.. Are you attempting to copy via CIFS(SMB)SAMBA? Are you trying to copy into a jail or just into a main windows share? This is a permission issue.. You can run "ls -l" to see what is what permission wise..

I am trying to copy via Samba. I mapped the directory Movies to my local desktop as z:.
Just trying to copy into the main windows share. There have been no problems copy dozens of other movies (each in their own folder with associated artwork). Here is an example of the problem I am having trying to copy Coraline to my FreeNas box:

ls -l for the movie directory shows that owner, group and all users have read, write and execute privileges:

drwxrwxrwx 2 root wheel 16 Feb 14 08:19 Coraline (2009) [DVD] [PG] [voted 7.7] [Animation]

Inside the directory, I have been able to copy all of the artwork and .xml files all of which show read/write access for all users,
[root@Homeserver /mnt/HomeStor/Media/Movies/Coraline (2009) [DVD] [PG] [voted 7.7] [Animation]]# ls -l total 2423 -rw-rw-rw- 1 root wheel 42676 Feb 2 12:45 backdrop.jpg -rw-rw-rw- 1 root wheel 46250 Feb 2 12:45 backdrop1.jpg -rw-rw-rw- 1 root wheel 66272 Feb 2 12:45 backdrop10.jpg -rw-rw-rw- 1 root wheel 37294 Feb 2 12:45 backdrop11.jpg -rw-rw-rw- 1 root wheel 99009 Feb 2 12:45 backdrop2.jpg -rw-rw-rw- 1 root wheel 37465 Feb 2 12:45 backdrop3.jpg -rw-rw-rw- 1 root wheel 47729 Feb 2 12:45 backdrop4.jpg -rw-rw-rw- 1 root wheel 45272 Feb 2 12:45 backdrop5.jpg -rw-rw-rw- 1 root wheel 28458 Feb 2 12:45 backdrop6.jpg -rw-rw-rw- 1 root wheel 51372 Feb 2 12:45 backdrop7.jpg -rw-rw-rw- 1 root wheel 35467 Feb 2 12:45 backdrop8.jpg -rw-rw-rw- 1 root wheel 53861 Feb 2 12:45 backdrop9.jpg -rw-rw-rw- 1 root wheel 550804 Feb 3 18:30 folder.jpg -rw-rw-rw- 1 root wheel 34845 Feb 3 18:41 movie.xml

However when I copy the .avi file, it spend a few minutes, saying that it is copying, and then at the end the file copy dialog window says I need permission to complete the actions.

I even deleted the entire folder and copied everything at one. Everything copied over except for the .avi file

I guess it has to be a permission problem, but why is it only affecting the .avi files? I can create, delete any other folders and files that I want.
