  • TrueNAS: TrueNAS-12.0-U8.1
  • Motherboard: X470D4U
  • Processor: AMD Ryzen 5 3600
  • Memory: 4xKingston 16GB ECC 9965745-002.A00G
  • Disks (Pool):
    • 6xHGST HUS726040ALA614
    • 1xHGST HUS726040ALE610

  • Disks (OS):
    • 2xGIGABYTE GP-GSM2NE8128GNTD (RAID1)
  • Network: 8086 Intel

Been running pretty solid for the better part of 1.5 years but late last week when I was on travel, I got an alert saying that /dev/ada2 was having issues and that my pool was degraded. Essentially that the error count when from 0 to 1 and there were unreadable sectors. No big deal as I've had drive issues in the past so I took out a new one (another HGST at the time), Offlined the drive, swapped in the new one, and went to Replace and let resilvering commence. This is when the issues began.

About 20% into resilvering my machine just rebooted. Ended up with some more email alerts essentially saying the same thing, /dev/ada2 error count increased from 0 to 20, unreadable sectors, and there were 10 uncorrectable sectors. I thought this was odd but assumed I had another bad drive so I ran to Best Buy and grabbed the only WD Red drive they had and restarted the process. Again, the same thing, reboots everytime I unlock my pool (encrypted) and start resilvering.

I tried searching through the forums, I disabled my Jails and VM's from start at boot, removed power, etc however every time I unlock my pool and the resilvering process starts my machine will reboot within 30 minutes. I can't really figure out what the issue is as I don't have good logs, just my email alerts when it goes down and comes back up.

Any guidance would be appreciated.

Have you applied the known Ryzen BIOS fixes for early Ryzen systems?
  • Disable Cool-n-Quiet
  • Disable C6 states
Without these, you may experience instability like your reboots during resilvers.

Thank you for the reply. I did not know that was a thing. I went into BIOS and disabled C6 mode however I don't see an option to disable Cool-n-Quiet. I did try to resilver with just C6 disabled, and I encountered the same issue. It appears to spontaneously reboot between 3-20% complete. I was able to resilver a while back with C6 enabled but that was an earlier version of TrueNAS. Any other ideas?

Another update, apparently my ada3 and ada2 drive bays swapped from what I had labeled. I noticed that ada3 went offline briefly when I swapped in ada2's replacement. So now I have two disks offline and I can't re-add them to the pool unless I resilver. I am going to try one at a time starting with what was originally bay 3/ada3 but that is no labeled as ada2/bay2. That disk was fine until I accidentally offline'd it.

So, the other bay and original drive resilvered with no issues this is the one I accidentally offline'd. The original bay that caused the reboots continues to reboot the machine regardless of which drive I try to re-add and resilver. Both the new WD Red and the new HGST cause the machine to reboot. I am beginning to think it's an issue with bay and not necessarily the drive.

So I took the drive out of the bay and disconnected minisas from the sta3_2 port and direct connected a new drive via a new SATA cable and the issue persists. At this point I either won the unlucky lottery with drives or the SATA port is starting to go. Any thoughts on what to try next?

It turns out it was a sata port on my board. I migrated to an LSI HBA via PCI and everything went fine.
