Need a bit of newbie guidance..
End goal: A 10Gbe server to keep AV media at working speed for single user production. Inspired by popular cinevate 10gbe guide (http://www.cinevate.com/blog/confessions-of-a-10-gbe-network-newbie-part-1-basics/).
Went and bought
- Supermicro SE-847E16-R1K28LPB (here: http://www.ebay.com/itm/132071105467) with 192GB DDR3. It has a single LSI card with one 8087 connector supplying both back planes (24+12) as far as I can tell.
- 32x 3Tb enterprise SATA drives. I was thinking 3x 6drive raidz2 initially with the rest used for hot spares and a backup solution.
- 10gbe intel adapters
Question:
- will I not be limited by single 8087 bandwidth to the drives? I wasn't aware, but this (http://www.natecarlson.com/2010/05/07/review-supermicros-sc847a-4u-chassis-with-36-drive-bays/) advises to get the 847"A" version for freenas to get more lanes. If I need to change stuff, is this an easy fix or should I change chassis to begin with? Time is limited, money less so, and would rather this be right from the get go (but obviously don't want to burn unnecessary cash)
If you have a good resource for newbies on back planes and expanders I think I need to read that.
Best regards
