-- freenas1 Specs: SuperMicro SuperStorage Server 5028R-E1CR12L | Xeon E5-2637V3 | 128GB DDR4 2133MHz ECC RDIMM | X10SRH-CLN4F | On-board LSI 3008 (Flashed w/Avago v9-IT) | 12x 4TB WD-Re SAS| 2x Intel S3700 (SLOG and L2ARC)

My question concerns using more than 8 SAS drives….
in the motherboard manual…
"L-SAS 0-3, 4-7 SAS Connectors 0-7 (supported by the LSI 3008 SAS controller)”

" In addition to SATA connections, there are eight SAS connections (L-SAS 0-7) supported by the LSI 3008 SAS controller. These Serial Link connections provide faster data transmission than legacy Parallel ATA. See the table on the right for pin definitions.”

Does this mean that 4 of the 12 disk drive cannot be SAS drives since the controller only supports 8”? (assuming the use of the on-board controller)

My email to support@SuperMicro got this reply-- "It is correct that there are only 2 physical connections on the motherboard and each can only do 4 drives. If you want to use onboard LSI 3008 SAS controller, it can only support up to 8 drives."

But then, I've seen pictures from both depasseg and https://www.newegg.com/global/uk/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816139042 that make it look like all the drives are connected via the SAS ports....

Maybe Supermicro support was wrong? Anyone have any first-hand knowledge? It doesn't make much sense to me to have a 12-bay SAS3 server that can only handle 8 drives...

Thanks,

Rich
