I thought I'd share because it seems the "smart people here are not helpful". I'm a newbie so the experts here can't teach us the simple stuff. LOL
I finally fixed this issue. It appears that I had not set the Path under Sharing --> Apple (APF) Share. once I set the Path, SMB started to work by hitting the host name "FreeNAS" the the left Location section in Finder.
The moral is that in spite of the fact that TimeMachine (using APF) works, without a path set under Sharing, it causes SMB be misconfigure. Yes, you can directly access SMB by going under Go -->Connect to Server, enter the IP address, login but it is more convenient to hit the host name.
