Hey BottomsUp,

First thing would be to get redundancy before getting speed. If you have a single drive, then it means you have no redundancy at all. You should get yourself a second 1TB drive and add it as a mirror to your first drive. That will give you a first level of redundancy and will also speed up read access by letting FreeNAS read from both drives at once.

sorry I should’ve mentioned I have two of these in a raid mirror

You'll see a substantial increase in performance with a couple of 1TB WD Red SSDs. Each runs around $140 on Amazon.

Wow, Samsung F1s? They'd been around for a while by 2010, IIRC.
