according to /var/log/messages it happened in different hours during the day.
what/where can I check the source of the issue?

Sounds like a NIC that lost its connection to the network, then got it back, over and over. Might want to check your hardware.

Check the speed/duplex settings on the network switch. Try setting it manually to 1000/full or 100/full whatever works best.
