Hi Guys,
I was try to run ESXi VM over FreeNAS 11 for test purposes.
The VM starts and hangs on the moment when loads everything and try start the install process.
I have tried to dun any other linux install and finish with the same issue, or even worst - VM do not even start proper.
Do some of you have such problem and how you solve it?

Since I don't rely on this - there no hard feelings but as is mentioned FreeNAS to be just another possible virtualization platform is sad to have such results.
Does this is important for FreeNAS? Hell YES!!
Modern hardware is much more powerful and often provide multi-core CPU and lots of RAM which to be spent in vein if FreeNAS is installed on it.
If will not be able to do virtualization then will be changed by its rivals and soon will be forgotten.

Just running some plugin app is not enough anymore for FreeNAS.
So I want to rise the concern around this keystone feature.
FreeNAS has to have robust virtualization (and at least very basic firewall abilities).

You can virtualize FreeNAS.

Are you trying to Virtualize ESXi under FreeNAS?

Yes, just for test purposes.
Both posts are mine.

Unfortunately this isn't work well and I consider to share my concern why inhibited virtualization is important.
If the FreeNAS wants to stay as underdog - no virtualization. Then FreeNAS will b used only on obsolete hardware and so on...
But if FreeNAS have decent virtualization then will be used in many small size premises as good solution if not a primary solution!
Just consider how much will cost you initial VMWare licensing...
But if do not have virtualization will you consider to run the FreeNAS over server with 24 cores and 256GB?
Certainly no - since not much of this will be used. You will look to use another machine - even old one will rise the TCO.
So this rises the OC (operation cost) for small organizations and labs and we all know where this heading.

FreeNAS virtualization is based on FreeBSD virtualization, which is based on bhyve.

Bhyve is still very young and immature.
http://bhyve.org

In order to run a hypervisor in a hypervisor you need Nested EPT support. Nested EPT support is in a research phase.

I'm sure the bhyve guys are aware they can't run ESXi... but there is a lot more work to be done in a lot of areas.
