So need some options to connect to a share remotely.

Ftp and sftp are not going to work.

sort of like how dropbox works, or mounting a remote share like webdav.

I would recommend using nothing less than a SSH tunnel to access your data. Dropbox works as well as it does because they have the hardware, software, time, manpower, and money behind it.

hmm ok, makes sense. So connect via ssh tunnel then to share. any links that can help me setup?

I also forgot to mention that you should use a VPN connection.
