nvidia shield + kodi 18 + smb = operation not permitted

As the title says I'm having trouble connecting to my smb shares on freenas from Kodi 18 installed on an android shield. The current Kodi 18 RC supports up to smb3. I have no problems accessing these shares from Kodi installed on a PC. When I manually add the share in Kodi I'm simply given an error of "operation not permitted". I'm also posting this question on the Kodi forums but figured someone here might be able to shed some light on this.

Were you able to resolve this? If not, anything in /var/log/messages when the error occurs?
