Hi all.

I hope you can help. This is a list of the hardware I am thinking of using for a backup and plex server.
I am hoping to have 4 x 4TB WD Red Nas drives on raid 10 or raid 5 with a fifth 4TB drive as a standby drive. I would like to use a 500GB SSD as a cache drive to improve performance.

I am pretty sure the hardware will have enough grunt for the job but I only have experience with normal raid controller cards and software raid. All my experience is windows server based and I have no experience with ZFS or even Linux aside from the basics but I know its a pretty rock solid file system. Here is the hardware spec.....

StarTech 4 Bay Aluminum Trayless Hot Swap Mobile Rack Backplane For 3.5in SAS II/SATA III - 6 GBPS HDD

Asus Intel PRIME Z270-A LGA 1151 ATX Motherboard

Intel Core i7 6700 3.4GHz Socket 1151 8MB L3 Cache Retail Boxed Processor

Cooler Master HAF X Hgh Airflow Full Tower

Aerocool Integrator 700W 80+ Certified PSU 12cm Black Fan Active PFC TW Caps UK Cable

G.Skill Trident Z RGB 16GB Kit DDR4 3866MHz RAM

WD Red 4TB 3.5" SATA NAS Hard Drive

Crucial MX300 525GB SATA III 2.5inch SSD

WD Blue M.2 250GB Internal SSD

Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 4 Heatpipes/1x120mm Fan CPU Air Cooler

Can anyone point out any trapdoor's or woopsie's I have made.
Any help or advice that you all have for a Freenas noob will be appreciated. :)

Welcome to the forum @Stuartbe.

Let me start by saying that FreeNAS uses ZFS, to no Raid10 or Raid5. Try to get familiar with ZFS and read this great guide: https://forums.freenas.org/index.ph...ning-vdev-zpool-zil-and-l2arc-for-noobs.7775/. It will give you a better idea on how to setup your NAS.

I'm a fan of Raidz2 as it gives two HDs redundancy in case of failure, so always go with five or more disks on my builds.

Also it seems you are using desktop parts on your build, so take a look at https://forums.freenas.org/index.php?resources/hardware-recommendations-guide.12/ for better ideas. I've started my servers long ago using desktop parts I have available and can't say I had problems, but if I had to buy new, I'd go with the recommended hardware as the difference is not that big. For instance a SUPERMICRO MBD-X11SSL-O Micro ATX Server Motherboard is about $180 and yours $195 and no ECC memory supported. Your CPU $415 and an Intel Xeon E3-1245 v5 SkyLake $204, and so on. The difference will be the ECC memory, but you can plan to get the max you need in two stages.

Just food for thoughts.

Thanks for the information Melloa I will read up on that link for ZFS. I know its a very mature file system. From classes at uni some 20+ years ago now I think it spreads the parity stripe over all the drives.

I did look at server grade hardware. It sounds like I have over spec'd the cpu. I will have a look at that motherboard, as long as it has at least 6 sata ports it will be fine.

I am curious to know how well the cpu you sugested will cope with the plex transcoding as plex will be its primary role as well as a weekly backup from another office over a vpn.

Thank you for all the helpful information. :)

Just found this........

http://www.ebuyer.com/700009-hpe-pr...-e5-2603v3-1-6-ghz-4gb-ram-2u-rack-788148-425

Verdict please. I already have 6 4TB WD NAS Aware drives and the ssd + m.2 500MB to install freenas to.

Does anyone know if these servers come with 3.5" caddies and what kind of noise level they generate as this unit is going into a rack in the corner of an office. I have tried this suppliers support and the "experts" there think ohms law is something to do with the highway code :(

The reason I pick this supplier is that the company have an account with them.

Thanks again all.

as long as it has at least 6 sata ports it will be fine.

That was my mistake two years ago. I got a Motherboard with 10 SATA ports 'cause I want to use my 10x4TiB HDs... Today? Use a HBA. You can buy a new one and don't have the headace to flash it to IT mode or have fun re-flashing an used one (I did, so anyone can ;) ). That same link for the recommended hardware will have info on those.

this unit is going into a rack in the corner of an office.

I can't honestly say if that server is quite, but have to assume is noise as hell. Usually those servers are built for closets, far from people :)

I'm very pick with noise ... just rebuilt a SM chassis to use as my desktop and replaced ALL fans. Anything above 20 dbs didn't make to the list. Noise was one of the things that made me abandon the r710 idea for my vSphere... re-built another SM chassis for that, with new fans, including the PSU one.

Hi All.

I have looked up two commercial grade servers. I have listed them below. What would you suggest? Im leaning towards the Haswell build. Im not sure if the units have the correct port speeds and type.

I have also seen mention on a video that only the commercial freenas boxes support hot standby drives and ssd cache. Is this correct?

I have the hard drives (WD Red's) Here are the two servers..... I think the second server is better value.

As always any help or advice is appreciated.

Thanks
