What list? By car, d you mean an HBA? I don't recall any recommendations for HBAs not based on LSI 2008/2308 controllers. If so, must've been an ancient list. All current stickies were up to date, last time I checked.

A SASUC8I used to be on an approved list. I went ahead and pulled the trigger on the card based on the fact it was on an "approved list". While the card was in transit, I did a bit more digging around. Seems the card had a 2TB cap due to 32bit. While the card is fully supported and would work, the M1015 is a MUCH better solution. Here is my post on that.

If such a list existed, it would need to be reviewed each month or more I would think. Ain't nobody got time for that.

Having built all this and doing dry runs with what I intend to use the server for, I'd say I overspent on the CPU and underspent on the drives. The CPU idles along at less than 10% load, often less than 5%, for several simultaneous transfers. I haven't tried transcoding yet but it should have more than enough power for several streams. I could easily have gotten away with a Core i3 or even a Pentium. But I "only" have 3.6 TB capacity in my array. That's plenty for now but it might not be in the future.

As explained in this thread though, this hardware might not be relevant in the future. Who knows what Broadwell or Skylake (Intel future processors) will bring?
