I tell FreeNAS to install it and have the box ticked to 'Apply updates after rebooting'
The install went ahead. I rebooted at the end.

nothing.

The updates were not applied.

I have tried this three times now and still I am the same version.

How is that possible?

To clarify, which "Build" string is displayed in System -> Information?

Also, how big is the boot device and how many boot entries exist in System -> Boot?

See my answers:
FreeNAS-9.3-STABLE-201502232343 is the string.

I now see- for the very first time a new build.
FreeNAS-9.3-STABLE-201502271818 is the new string.

I have about 10 builds on my USB stick - right from the very first one you released. I took the opportunity of deleting them through the GUI option. Another nice feature I just noticed, you can delete more than one at a time and do a bulk delete. Its a bit slow ( But then its only a normal SD card)

I activated the new build and rebooted.

In the system info the build is still showing as
FreeNAS-9.3-STABLE-201502232343 is the string.

In the boot menu it shows:
FreeNAS-9.3-STABLE-201502271818 is the string with a comment on reboot , now

Rebooted a few times,
System info show 'FreeNAS-9.3-STABLE-201502232343'

But when you look on the boot screen options it shows 'FreeNAS-9.3-STABLE-201502271818 is the string with a comment on reboot , now'

When the system reboots - surely it should be running 'FreeNAS-9.3-STABLE-201502271818'? and not 'FreeNAS-9.3-STABLE-201502232343'.
what would stop that?

That is weird, if you selected FreeNAS-9.3-STABLE-201502271818 from the boot menu but the system info build shows as FreeNAS-9.3-STABLE-201502232343. If that's what you're saying, please create a bug report at bugs.freenas.org and post the issue number here.
