I have a Dell 2950 w PERC 5. As far as I am able to determine, the best option of setting up the system controller as a JBOD controller is not possible with PERC5. My other options are setting each disk up separately as RAID0 or set them up as RAID5. From searching the forum (and several other websites) mixing HW RAID5and ZFS is not recommended - correct? This leaves RAID ) with teh PERC5 controller. I have read some posts that indicate the RAID0/ZFS combination is slow and apparently less than optimum - is this correct?
Is my understanding of the facts about the Dell 2950/PERC5/ZFS accurate? How bad is the speed hit on the RAID0/ZFS combination? Are there other options someone would recommend, or is this just not a good server for ZFS/FreeNAS? Are there older versions of FreeNas (non ZFS?) that would work better?
