Hey, I'm from Connecticut. FreeNAS has been on my radar for awhile after some limited success with Amahi (as a file storage server only). This morning we had a big scare, or rather, my wife did -- accidentally deleting 3 years of lesson plans (it turned out to be only a month's worth, but data recovery is ongoing) so I thought it high time to get ourselves a NAS solution. I opted to order the budget system outlined here, except that my drive pool will be much smaller at the moment (using 2x 2TB spare drives) and use a 64gb SSD instead. Anyways, happy to learn a lot here in these forums in the future!

Welcome to the forums :)

First order of business when you've set-up your FreeNAS box; configure snapshots. I've been there, accidentally deleted a file and had the "oh shit" moment. Snapshots are good for this, providing somewhat of a idiot proof buffer. Obviously set a schedule that works for you.
