ftp acces denied

Hello i have 2 servers runing freenas on 2 Dell r610 servers.
Now i am trying to download a file from 1 or the other using winscp with FTP i go to /mnt/mainstorage/thefile
wen i try to download it i get the error message acces denied even though i am loged in as root and have even set the permission on the folder and all subfodlers / files to 0777 this is hapening sins i have updated the servers before it has all been working fine.

Anything in /var/log/auth.log or /var/log/messages when the attempt fails?

i dont get anything in those log files wen i try to grab the files (i can grab the log files from /var/log/auth.log and /var/log/messages how ever)
also quick note in the auth.log i see a massive amount of failed login atempts on a lof of random user names. i suspect some people are trying to log in? its a realy strong password so i dont think i am to concernt

alride i disabled that. the problem i have is local how ever
