Freenas - Problem on disk before migration - need advices

Hello,

I've my freenas since three or three years now and someone advises me to upgrade to 9..2 or 9.3. So I was about to do it and I was surprised to see errors related to disks. As there is no impact on applications, I didn't see them.
I need your help in order to get rid off this errors as I understood that I first correct them before migrating;

I'm little bit affraid migrating to a new version with these errors. How to revover this ?

Do you have backups? I hope so. If not, seriously consider backing up everything of value from the system before proceeding further.

The SMART results for ada2 show that it is FAILING_NOW. It looks like it may have run out of spare sectors, and every Short offline test in the log shows failure at 90% complete. This disk should be replaced first. Follow the directions for replacing a failed drive carefully, using the documentation for your version of FreeNAS.

If the array survives the resilver, consider also replacing ada3. It has far fewer bad sectors, but with 248 plus 24 pending, I wouldn't trust it.

As far as upgrading to version 9.anything, your hardware doesn't look very suitable for that.

Hello,
Thanks for your your reply. I'm going to follow your advices and change the disks.
I'll backup all data. This server is principally a file server for me. (photos, movies, ...). There are important data for me. It's why I built it on freenas / RAID5.
However, I don't understand your last sentence. "My hardware doesn't look very suitable for that".
I bought a quite good motherboard supporting RAID5, I can have six disks linked to it. I put 8Gb but I can add more if needed.
Do you mean that I have to increase something specific before migrating to freenas 9.anything ? Let me know, I'll do it asap.

When I saw Celeron and 8GB I just assumed the worst, but if you post your complete hardware specs that would be helpful. First look at ark.intel.com suggests the G530 is reasonably modern but doesn't support ECC memory.

Here's my configuration :
MotherBoard socket 1155 MSI H67MA-E35 (Revision B3). I set them with Raid 5
4 disks Seagate Barracuda 2Tb
Memory 8Gb
OCZ PSU ZS550W-EU - ZS Series, 550W 80Plus Bronze
Processor Intel® Celeron® Processor G530 (2M Cache, 2.40 GHz)

For the memory, I heard that for ZFS, we have to set 2GB per disk. So ...
Perhaps I was wrong. But Up to now, I didn't get any performance problem.

Let me know if I need to upgrade some elements of my server.

You are right. I configured it a long time ago now. But I think I remembered that I configured it using the freenas webgui.
I'm unale to look at the configuration just now. I think I need to dig a lot but I think I follow a tuto on Freenas that show how to et a RAID 5 easily.
It's a reeason why I choose Freenas as a file server. I lost several disks and I wouldn't continue to lost data after a disk crash. Using Raid 5, I was quite sure to keep the data.

Your zpool status shows a RAIDZ1 pool, which means ZFS software RAID, which is good. Your SMART output indicates that the disk controller is not getting in the way, which is also good. Do not reconfigure your system to use hardware RAID.

On the other hand:
  • RAIDZ1 (similar to RAID5) is pretty fragile with drives larger than 1TB
  • your CPU and motherboard do not support ECC memory (up to you whether to take that chance)
  • 8GB of RAM is fine for a storage server, but a bit limiting if you start adding plugins
Under the circumstances, after you finish backing up your data, you should at least consider replacing your system with something more suitable, and building a new pool using a RAIDZ2 vdev layout. Take a look at my signature for one of the low-end options that ticks the most important boxes.
