FreeNAS iSCSI exposes physical disk as a target or creates a virtual disk and then exposes it as iSCSI target?

I am comparing iSCSI feature in between Microsoft (in-built iSCSI initiator) and FreeNAS.
Microsoft exposes a VHD on iSCSI. What about FreeNAS? I guess, if physical disk is exposed as iSCSI target, it will be much faster. There are paid tools available but not sure about FreeNAS.

iSCSI works with ZVOLs or individual file extents so possibly equivalent in the terms you're using.
