Is this possible? I was going to put a feeNAS box at a friends house and he was going to put one at mine as offsite storage.. We would do the first massive backup at home then transport to the others house.

Is this doable?

Also, is it possible to have time machine work remotely?

We do run macs

I just started messing around with freeNAS yesterday..so don't talk over my head LOL

You'd be using replication over the Internet, encrypted by SSH. It should work fine as long as you have the capacity to keep up with the deltas and don't go over any cap imposed by your ISP.

You do not want to use TimeMachine over the Internet. For one, you'd be opening up AFP or SMB to the public to be hacked on. I wouldn't trust it. Another option would be connecting to a VPN first, but while this would be safer, you're still transferring way too much data. TimeMachine can be flakey enough over Wireless LAN. I doubt your backups would complete even once. Plus, why would you want to use TimeMachine remotely? Just backup locally and use replication to get your sparsebundle to your friends system.
