Hey Guys,
after the silent time has gone I now have time to build my first server.
It should not use a lot of power (in standby), it should be affordable for a student, it should be able to do media streaming (Plex), partly backup (yes, I do have other additional backup plans) and encrypt (encFS) my data, should offer me an owncloud, jdownloader and some build services (GitLab, Jenkins).
I will use virtualization using proxmox with 2 freeNAS (or one freeNAS and one debian with ZFS on linux) operating systems. To reduce power costs maybe I'm not going to run the virtual machines or the machine itself (using IPMI) all the time. Also it should be as much as silent as makeable.
The setup is the following:
I want to discuss if the i3-4370 would be a better choice (would reduce costs) for me. I've read it has ECC ability and I guess in the most cases the power would be enough (or definitely not?).
Ok, from ECC ability to RAM. I thought about Crucial RAM to reduce the costs. I want to reach 16GB of RAM. But I'm not really experienced in choosing the corect module. A friend of me recommende me the Crucial CT102472BD160B 8GB DDR3 PC3-12800 module, will it also meet my needs (ZFS and java)? Or would you really choose a more expensive tested samsung ram from the QVL ?
As I saw there was no 300W power supply offering me a gold certificate which I wanted for my server.
Two of the Three Hard drives I will turn on mirror vdev (after I've read that RAID Z2 and Z3 is deprecated) and one I will run without redundancy. On the ssd the virtualization and the 2 operating systems will run. One storage will be for media and cloud, the other one for backup purposes.
For cooling the Noctua fans and the two 120mm fans will be enough, optionally I can built another 80mm fan in, but then the machine will surely not run 24/7/365.
Last of all the Lian Li PC was a design decision. I know I don't want more hard drives. I guess everything should fit in.
Do you have recommendations for me or did I something wrong (it's my first server)?

The setup is the following:
- SUPERMICRO X10SLH-F (Not the 1151 Socket to reduce costs)
- Intel BX80646E31230V3 (Would the i3-4370 be a better choice?
- Samsung M391B1G73QH0-YK0
- Transcend SSD370 SSD 256GB
- be quiet! BN230 Straight Power E10 400W (Or 300W and not gold certified?)
- PNL-Tec Noctua NH-L12 Low Profile (Should be enough)
- 3x Western Digital WD6001FFWX 6GB
- Lian Li PC-V355B Micro-ATX Cube, black - silenced (caseking silencer)
