I am choosing to mount, using old server parts .I live in Brazil, where there is no many Supermicro motherboard options, and are very expensive here.

Please evaluate whether this hardware configuration, can still do well in one for home use.

  1. * Hardware:
  2. * Motherboard (Model) :
    Supermicro X8sil
  3. * CPU (Model)
    Intel Xeon X3450
  4. * RAM Size (in GB and model) : 16 GB ECC (4x4 GB )
  5. Hard Drives (Model) : 4x 3 TB Seagate (already own these hard drives, then buy other not be an option. )
  6. PSu : Corsair cx430W
My data is very important?
A: No ,I'll stores 4 tb TV series, music, porn, and other files.

How many devices will access my FreeNAS at the same time?
A:Today, 5 devices will access the FreeNAS (2 tv, 2 pcs and 1 smartphone)

You will use plugins?
A:Yes I will use plex and torrent client.

I look forward to help the community.

thanks .

Yeah, those parts should work.
Make sure to schedule SMART tests and scrubs, those 3TB Seagates have notoriously high failure rates.
I would recommend configuring your pool as RAIDZ2. That should give you somewhere around 5-6TB. A RAIDZ1 would give you closer to 8-9TB, but is more risky.
Use a UPS if you can.
If you plan on using USB flash drives for your boot drives it is best to use 2 and let the installer mirror them.

You could consider using registered RAM, because you can use up to 4 8GB dimms if needed.
Unbuffered is limited to 4x4GB.
The CPU seems capable for a couple of full hd transcodes.
Later EDIT: x3470 is faster and almost at the same price.
The most capable cpu of the x3400 series is the x3480, which is 50% faster than the x3440, but almost double the price (at least from what I see on ebay)

AFAIK this motherboard is picky regarding the type of modules it supports, so keep that in mind; search for compatible registered RAM, not any kind of ddr3 registered dimms.

That memory is not on the compatibility list for your motherboard, so it may or may not work.
If you get 32 GB of RAM you could use the SSD as an L2ARC. You could create a pool out of it for your jail root if you wish.

I not found RAM memories RDIMM with good price in my country. I'm thinking of just buying a kvr13le9s8/4 module and test if it will work, if it works I will buy more 3, making 16 GB DDR3 UDIMM.

To 16 GB DDR3, L2ARC is not a good option?

"You could create a pool out of it for your root jail if you wish." it would be for the installation of plugins?

Correct, 16 GB of RAM is a bit too small to start using an L2ARC.

Yes, you could install your plugins to it. I don't know how big of a difference it would make though, because you would still have to attach them to your main pool for bulk storage. I'd say start without it and add it later if you feel it would help.

I'd advise against using Kingston RAM, especially as in the case of the RAM that they used to recommend for the Supermicro board I bought (see my sig.) they later said (after they had taken them off the "recommended" list and later discontinued them altogether) , "You should be OK with just two modules, but four of the same might not work" (paraphrase of their actual words).
