I have a SSD that i will use for the boot disk.

I want to get a supermicro chassis and i found this one with a board and two opteron in it.

I think this is a SAS2 backplane but im not totally sure. Also i am not sure if this board and procs are ok to use.

I am going to put 32GB in ram to start and im planning on buying this.

I'm not 100% certain, but I don't think that RAM will work in that motherboard. I was able to find this
at the Supermicro website and it's in stock!!!

The TQ designation would be SATA, not SAS. The board and CPUs are older hardware but will work,
the downside is they will burn some serious watts.

I would keep looking, the good news is you are on the right track!

Hey thanks for you reply.

Man that RAM is expensive. I was hoping to keep it below 150 for 32GB.
I guess in the end it might be worth dropping another 200 on a board and cpu.

Do you see any issue with pulling out that mobo/cpu and putting in another set. ill post what i come up with here in a few.

Not at all, but why not just buy a chassis minus the Mobo/CPU for a lower price.

ok what do you think about these. Looks like that RAM price point i had was wildly unrealistic. 400 for 32gb of ram is hard to swallow lol. this is what i have.

MicroATX
180 - mobo https://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod...3182980&cm_re=X11SSL-F-_-13-182-980-_-Product

50 - CPU https://www.amazon.com/Intel-BX8066...534132576&sr=8-1&keywords=Intel+Pentium+G4400

400 - 32gb ecc ddr4 udimm
https://www.amazon.com/Crucial-Tech...4296&sr=1-1&keywords=16gb+ddr4+ecc+udimm+2400

ATX
250 - MOBO- https://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod...3182927&cm_re=X10SRL-F-_-13-182-927-_-Product

65 - CPU -

360 - RAM -

I am not sure which one to go with but probably ATX. do you have any advice to build a cheaper system that is rack mountable and can support 6 6tb drives? if this is what the price is then that is what it is but i want to make sure that im not overbuilding. All i need it to do is run the raid. i wont be using any jails or anything like that. i have another virtualization server for things like that. I want it to be rack mountable so i can have everything in one place.

With your use case, I would go with the socket 1151 and the pentium CPU,
the socket 2011 is overkill IMHO.

Keep searching for a used chassis, I was only giving the link as an example.
These used equipment vendors have new stuff to sell almost every week
and will often times take less than the asking price. Look for eBAY best offers,
ask questions about the backplanes, making sure you are getting a SAS2.
Here in the Dallas area, I've done business with the The Server Store, pdneiman and
Garland Computer.
All these vendors have local pickup, so you could pay Texas sales tax and drive
down to Dallas or pay shipping to OKC, which ever suits you best.
I did look at that one but it doesnt have any drive trays. I guess the ~60 for the trays would still make it worth it
Drive trays are easy to find, I just bought 24 of them for under $75 a couple of weeks
ago.

The TQ designation would be SATA
SATA-style connectors, but SAS signalling still works (minus dual-channel operation, but that only works on the dual-expander backplanes anyway).
