FlynnVT: It looks like the problem is fixed in FreeBSD 10? If so we just have to wait for FreeNAS to be upgraded to that base, right? I've been using FreeNAS for a very, very long time. Most recently, on the 8.3 branch. Tonight I upgraded to 9.2.0 and experienced this same problem. I run ESXi 4.1 and use the CLI RDM with -z option. Not a single issue for years, even though power losses, etc. After the upgrade, my disks are 0B and do not show any zpools. Luckily, I backed up my config, so going back to 8.3.1 will be cake. I was very thankful to find this thread so I could figure out what happened.
I've been very happy with virtual ZFS, but it's only ever been for home use. I use it as a NAS for all of my digital hoarding. I also have a cloud backup of everything that is on the volume. This is a forum for user-to-user support. No single user is obligated to offer assistance in any particular thread. I don't think anyone would blame the anti-virtualization crowd for completely ignoring threads where VT is employed. The anti-VT rants only aim to derail effort by users who are trying to solve their own problems. I have no doubt that avoiding virtualization is the best advice and is stated for good reason. That said, not everyone is able to devote bare metal to FreeNAS due to what I am sure is a variety of reasons. I suspect the constant thread crapping is what lead budmanxx to request a forum for VT users to help each other, unmolested.
On the flip side, no user should not feel entitled to help or answers, especially anyone using RDM. I'm very appreciative for this thread and the help it provided me tonight. Thanks again.
