Hi,

Time is correct, and my DC is the time server for the nas.
DNS is correct too, i can ping any server in my domain by its name.

I didn't change the config after upgrade, all was working like a charm in 9.2.1.7, did a GUI upgrade and now freenas won't join the AD. :-(

Is it a Windows DC? What domain functional level? Anything in the logs of the DC to indicate what is going wrong? Any interesting log entries in /var/log/samba4? (specifically log.wb-*) Are you using special characters in your domain admin username / password?

This may sound lame, but have you tried rebooting the NAS?

Hi,

So here are the answers :
- It is a Windows DC, to be clear there is 3 DC in my domain (2 with Windows 2003 server and 1 with 2008R2)
- Domain functional level is 2003
- Nothing appears in the log of the DC
- Special characters in admin password (not username) ... but i don't use it for freenas, i created a special user for it (FREENAS@my-domain), with password never expire and no special characters in it, with total control of the computer account in DC
- I've rebooted the NAS many times, with no changes

For logs in /var/log/samba4, i can't tell as i revert back to 9.2.1.7 (another USB key, so if necessary i can boot with the one on 9.2.1.8 to investigate)

Thanks for trying to help me ;)

Today i try a fresh install with 9.2.1.8 and upload my parameters from 9.2.1.7 and there is still the same problem.
Directory Services doesn't start.

I'd try going to IRC in the evening PDT and see if a developer is in that can tell you what the messages mean.

Try using the credentials of your domain admin account. I think there is a good chance that you need to use a domain admin account to do 'net ads join' after the upgrade. Your limited account may not have the necessary rights to join computers to a domain. If I remember correctly a local admin only has the right to synchronize directory service data (which is why it works for keeping your AD info up-to-date in 9.2.1.7)

Try doing the domain join from the CLI:

Code:
net ads join -U username -S DCname -d5

This will bump up logging level for the domain join and maybe give a clue about what's going wrong.

I updated from 9.2.1.7 to 9.2.1.8 today. My Directory Services also quit working. After reading several posts about "make sure your DNS is correct," I changed my Domain Controller and Global Catalog Server from the IP address to the FQDN and it corrected my issue.

hi, so I did a fresh install of 9.2.1.8 and after finding the info from Brad inside the Advanced Configuration of Directory Services, I still can't connect to my AD.

in Domain/Realm - domain.local
in host - nas hostname
and added the recommended configuration above at the DOmain Controller and Global Catalog server using the FQDN - still no lucky.

I can ping and resolve names both ways and from any other computer over the network I can resolve the nas hostname

Anyone has a better or working solution for this?

Under network --> Global Configuration
  • make sure that hostname and domain name are set correctly
  • name server is IP address of your DC
Under system --> NTP server
  • your DC is set as the NTP server
Turn on "Directory Services" prior to turning on "CIFS"

If it still doesn't work, try joining manually from the CLI
Code:
net ads join -U [Domain Admin Username] -d5

This should give some verbose output as samba tries the domain join. Post the output here enclosed in code tags.

Anodos,

My configuration is like that - the only thing that was differente was the fact that CIFS was already up, so I stopped the service, reviewed configs and when I click Directory Services it starts the CIFS back again but no the Directory.

Attached below is the output of the shell, it shows at the end an error about the PDC and the host - the computer was manually added to the active directory list of computers.

Searching a little more over the "Host is not configured as a member server." message seems like this occour when having more than one samba binary installed, guess not that my case since it's a full clean install and this is first config.

You should turn off CIFS, review the CIFS configuration under "Services" --> "CIFS" and change "Workgroup" to the proper one for your domain. For instance, your domain is "foo.com", your workgroup in the CIFS config should be "foo". Once those options are set. Make sure CIFS is stopped, start Directory Services.

Changed in CIFS and Directory Services the field from WORKGROUP to foo, still same issue

I'm restarting from scratch, and gonna follow all the steps, get back to you.

Note that it shouldn't be "foo" it should be based off of your domain name.
Yes, that I understood, I used the first part of my domain. like it is orggroup.local I added only orggroup - While reinstalling, I'm taking another look the the Manual .

But thanks for the help till now, get back to tell if it worked.

Hello, I will join the topic.
I have FreeNAS 9.2.1.8 and I have a problem with the connection to the domain. 2012R2 AD domain and forest in 2012.
Go to "Services" -> "Directory Services" -> "Active Directroy" -> "Advanced mode"
Set "Domain Controller" to "dc01" (not FQDN)

Then turn go to "Services" -> "Control Services"
turn off CIFS
turn on Directory Services

Go to "Services" -> "Directory Services" -> "Active Directroy" -> "Advanced mode"
Set "Domain Controller" to "dc01" (not FQDN)
The box was empty but as completed the DC01, unfortunately it did not help
I turned off the cifs
