Hi,

I need help figuring out this, i have deleted some not needed data in one of my datasets to free up some space.
(Deleted through CLI).

After deletion of data the dataset still reports the same amount of used space?!?
Since this discovery i have restarted the server and done a scrub. But still the same issue.

Freenas version is 11.1-U5.

If i check WebbGUI this is what i see (see picture). The dataset in question is "OSX-Backup".

If i then check in CLI with "zfs list" command (see picture), i can see that space used is corresponding with the GUI, i think. The "Refer data" is more accurate to the data actually in the dataset.

If i then check the size of that directory "OSX-Backup" with the "du" command (see picture), i will get a size that reflects the data that is "actually" there.

Can someone explain why i'm seeing this, the data that i deleted was somewhere around 550-600GB isch.

Best Regards
Daniel

A scrub won't help.

Have you enabled periodic snapshots on the dataset?

Chances are you need to remove the snapshots containing the data also or you won't be able to have it back.

You can find them under Storage | Snapshots in the web GUI.

Hi,

Yes i had enabled snapshots. I have now removed that setting and deleted all present snapshots of the dataset.

That fixed my issue. Thanks for your input.

Had this "issue" fixed it self when the snapshots became to old and autoremoved? As my setting was to keep snapshots for 3 weeks, then discard.

Regards

It would have resolved itself as the snapshots expired and were deleted by the system.

Snapshots can be very useful, so I would recommend turning them back on and just handle this kind of exceptional circumstance manually when needed.

Ok nice to know. I have now reenabled the snapshot task for this dataset.

And again thanks for your help.
