I came across this issues before. I dont know if I should call it a bug or not. But maybe its intended to be this way. I do think it should be. I have a folder name foo, in a pool name bar. when i create a dataset in bar named foo, it overwrites the folder. i thought i had lost my files. i went back and deleted the dataset. and foo folder was there. but still missing files. i reset owner and permissions on that folder recursively. it brought my files back.
The BUG. should it warn me that a folder already exists when i try to create a dataset with the same name. I think it shouldnt even attempt to make a dataset if a folder exists. OR the very least give me a warning. Maybe i should post this under feature request.
