Long time, first time. I have good backups, so this is really just a curiosity at this point. But I don't understand why my data is gone after a graceful reboot./mnt/vol1/media/movies and /mnt/vol1/media/tv both exist as datasets under /mnt/vol1/media. Plex is configured with a Host Path to /mnt/vol1/media so it can see both datasets for libraries. I gracefully shut down the server while on UPS due to power loss, and when I brought the system back up, all files in tv are gone. The dataset itself is still there, but appears to be empty. Almost feels like I rm -rfed it up (at least that would make sense). media is unaffected. I'll provide the output of some relevant commands that I've seen here. I don't understand at this point what even happened. Was it really deleted (I'm the only one with access to the system), did I possibly setup the dataset or pool incorrectly such that a reboot erased the data? Seems to have only happened for the /mnt/vol1/media/tv dataset.

Code:

$ sudo zpool history vol1 | tail -50

Could these commands on the pool mean the tv data still exists in a snapshot?

Code:

Did zfs unmount /mnt/vol1/media/tv from

I can see my content now, but I still don't understand what I have wrong. Why would /mnt/vol1/media/tv have been a mount point in the first place? Because I added tv as a dataset under media?

You might be confusing datasets with folders (and subfolders).

From your output, the dataset "tv" is essentially empty.

If unmounting the dataset reveals files within the path /mnt/vol1/media/tv, then it implies you've been saving your files under this folder in the "media" dataset, and then later created an (empty) dataset that gets auto-mounted over the same path. Hence, when the dataset (i.e, "filesystem") is mounted over the path, you see empty contents.

I see, thank you for pointing that out. Is that generally accepted practice - to leave /mnt/vol1/media/tv as a folder for plex files in this way?
Would you expect the empty tv dataset will mount every time I boot (which is very rare)? Can I safely remove the unneeded tv dataset?

You sort of went in both directions.

You used "movies" as a dataset, which has been populated with many files.

Yet you (originally) used "tv" as a folder.

So if you decide to destroy the "tv" dataset and "be done with it", just keep in mind that your "movies" path is a mounted dataset, whereas your "tv" path is a plain folder. This can make snapshots, replications, and backups counter-intuitive and confusing.

If you want to keep the same consistent structure, you can rename the folder "tv" to "tv-folder". Then mount the "tv" dataset. Then copy everything from "tv-folder" to "tv". This will place everything on the "tv" dataset. Then you can safely delete the unneeded "tv-folder" and its contents within.

Keep in mind, you won't free any space if "media" currently has snapshots, since such snapshots will likely be holding onto the "deleted" TV files.

I also strongly advise you create a checkpoint for the pool before you do anything destructive:
Code:
zpool checkpoint vol1

Then after a day where everything seems fine, you can (and should) remove the checkpoint:
Code:
zpool checkpoint -d vol1

Are you mounting nfs?

NFS treats each dataset as its own file system. When creating the NFS share on the server, the specified dataset is the location that client accesses. If you choose a parent dataset as the NFS file share location, the client cannot access any nested or child datasets beneath the parent.

Ie, if you have a media directory, with nested subdirectories, and you want those directories to be datasets (so you can vary their snapshot policies, or replicate them separately etc) then you need to share/mount them all individually, rather than the parent.

OR mount the parent and have the subdirectories be directories and not datasets.

OR use SMB.
