Background:
I do a lot of HD video editing and photo manipulation from a Macbook Pro. I am considering a Synology NAS or building a new kit from scratch. I figure either option will be in the same ballpark cost wise, but like the idea that I will have more control and expandability with the FreeNas solution. I am still in the research phase, so please forgive my ignorance. I've found these forums extremely helpful, and thanks to everyone who contributes!
I also have a mixed environment of devices including 4 PC's, 2 Macbook Pro's, and a host of iPads/iPhones/etc.
I have Cat 5e network and a Netgear 1 gigabit switch.
My goal:
I would like to set up a FreeNas as follows:
1) Volume 1: "High Performance" striping intended for work-in-process video editing (a scratchpad). Desired speed would be 100 MB/sec or higher.
2) Volume 2: "High Capacity / High Reliability / Decent Performance" using ZFS Raid 10. The end product (photos, videos, etc) would be stored and shared here. 75 - 100 MB/Sec would be fine here.
The kit I'm looking at:
Intel i3 2105
ASUS Intel Mini ITX HT77
Corsair 16GB DDR3 1600
Corsair Modular Power Supply (650 Watt)
Fractal Design Node 304 Case
4 WD Red 2 TB Drives
2 WD Red 1 TB Drives
The Question:
Can I achieve the above with the right setup using FreeNas, and is it a "good idea" to try to do so? I figure I'm going to be spending roughly $1300 to build the above out. I understand I will probably need to use Link Aggregation to get the performance I desire, and per Apple Support I can purchase a thunderbolt to ethernet adapter that should help me set this up on the client side. I'm not sure what else I need to do on the FreeNas side but from the research I've done so far, I need to avoid Realtek and go with Intel ethernet adapters.
My plan B is to buy another SSD drive for my MBP if the high performance option isn't a good idea and too difficult to set up w/ link aggregation. So the priority is really the second option, but I'd prefer to have it all in one solution if possible.
Thanks much for any guidance.
