Hi guys,
I have had my FreeNAS installation on a thumb drive for one month now.
For some strange reason I got a kernel panic when the box restarted during a jail removal (plex)
I thought that if I install a new version on that thumb drive I could just auto import my volume.
But, sure I can see the raid but it will not be imported.
Code:
[root@Hermes] ~# zpool status
no pools available

Code:
[root@Hermes] ~# zpool import
  pool: raid
    id: 13645776273417919596
  state: ONLINE
status: One or more devices were being resilvered.
action: The pool can be imported using its name or numeric identifier.
config:

        raid ONLINE

I'm struggeling with the "One or more devices were being resilvered." status which might be the cause why it's not being imported?

From the output you posted I cannot see a problem, the pool should import fine. Which version of FreeNAS are you running and what are your hardware specs? Which error do you get if you auto-import the pool via GUI?

Build FreeNAS-9.2.0-RELEASE-x64 (ab098f4)
Platform Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU E6550 @ 2.33GHz
Memory 4074MB

That's the thing, I don't get any error message.
I choose:
Storage --> Auto Import Volume --> No encryption
Then the volume appears in the drop down menu
I click OK, the step 2 of 2 displays and my NAS reboots and then I have no volume in Storage.
Am I doing something wrong with the import? I seriously don't wanna loose any data... o_O
Do you want any logs, and which if that's the case?

This is where my system reboots, see imgur link, it then takes a couple of minutes for the machine to finnish rebooting and then nothings seems to have happen..
I have to refresh the webpage to gain access to FreeNAS again

Doesn't sound good. I would probably try to mount it via CLI, but most likely it will also cause a panic. At least you'll be able to see what's going on. I don't know what else you could do, maybe somebody else has another suggestion.

Forgive me for being dumb here, but how do I do that? Pretty new to FreeNAS... I have console access and ssh, I just need the correct command to mount the raid.

zpool import raid should do the trick. It'll complain about a missing mount point, but that is no problem since we just want to import it for now. After that you should b able to see the pool with zpool status.

EDIT: Just to add a warning: Every crash bears the risk of damaging your pool further. So you might want to make sure that your RAM and Hardware is OK before attempting that. If the data is important and you don't have a backup, consider cloning all drives to new ones before tampering with the pool.

Okay so you think it might have something to do with some hardware issue? Like RAM? I've had some suspicions about one of the modules before, I have infact place an order for 4 new ones.
I tried to import it via cli now, the console flooded by text but I managed to take a picture, didn't looked very good though, see link below...

It might be hardware related, and you can easily rule out the RAM if you run memtest86+ overnight. You seem to get I/O and ATA errors, though, so maybe one of your drives is bad. Can you post the output of smartctl -a /dev/adaX for each of your drives (substitute X with numbers, usually 0,1,2,etc.)? Best obtain it via SSH session, and to keep the formatting, please post the results in [code]-Tags.

Well, I just helped someone less than 12 hours ago with the same symptoms as you.

The result, use 8GB of RAM or expect an out of memory condition to potentially damage your pool permanently. We do have system requirements and if you ignore them you'll find little sympathy here.

Here are my results from smartctl, I'll devide them into two posts due to the character length. I'll await the new memory modules and see if that solves my problem.

Yeah, all that smartctl stuff looks good. Getting the proper RAM isn't going to fix your problem.. once you've blown it, you've blown it. The only people that have had problems solved with more RAM are the people that wrongly enable dedup with insufficient RAM.

So unless you enabled dedup and haven't said you did, you're chances of this working are just above 0%. :(

People need to understand that the RAM thing is undoable. It's not like you can get a Hail Mary from the ZFS gods and bring back your pool after you've done stuff you shouldn't have.

But, good luck to you. Losing data is never fun.

Okay, I have only done a standard installation of FreeNAS, no fancy settings. Is there a way I can check wether or not I have dedup enabled?
But the main problem is lack of RAM then? It would be fail safe to add more RAM, reinstall OS, create a new raid and the I'll live happily ever after?
I have the most of the essential on a couple of USB drives. But I need to make sure that this don't happen again since it takes like forever to copy the data from the drives.

You might be able to try zdb -D poolname. But, I'm 99% sure that doesn't work on an unmounted pool. I believe the pool has to be mounted to get dedup table info.

Also, if dedup was on it wouldn't cause an immediate crash. It would fill up your RAM, then start using swapspace(at which point it would take almost forever to mount your pool.. but wouldn't crash until MUCH later when there was no more swap space). You are definitely not hitting a dedup table limit as your crash is FAR too fast.

But the main problem is lack of RAM then? It would be fail safe to add more RAM, reinstall OS, create a new raid and the I'll live happily ever after?

Yes, the insufficient RAM is the cause. The result is your bad pool. You can add more RAM, reinstall the OS and create a new pool. Keep in mind since you are using non-ECC RAM if you have any kind of pool damage you could see the exact same result you are seeing now.. a trashed pool. This is why we have so many well written stickies on a variety of topics. Give them a read before going further so you don't make another common mistake that could be disastrous later. ;)

Yeah you were right, I got an zdb: can't open 'raid': No such file or directory when I tried it.

But that would not be the case with ECC RAM then? I'm planning to buy a completely new server, from the chassi and up :) So then I'll look for a mobo with ECC support.

Thanks for all the help so far!

ECC RAM has nothing to do with your problem.. at all. ECC RAM protects you from the potential for bit-flips and bad RAM. Without ECC RAM, if your RAM goes bad, you will damage your pool and get something similar to what you are seeing(but for a different reason).

Your problem is insufficient RAM. PERIOD. It has NOTHING to do with ECC RAM. ECC RAM is nothing more than a seatbelt in the car. Good to have to protect yourself, but hopefully you'll never have to use it.

Smart values look mostly ok, but the last drive has some weird ATA errors in the log. A subsequent SMART test did complete successfully, so I don't know if that is a problem. If you are running out of options, try disconnecting that drive and importing the pool in a degraded state. Almost sure that's not going to work, but since you have nothing to lose anyway..

Regarding RAM: Use ECC RAM if possible. See this thread for details.

Just a follow up on this thread in case someone else stumbles over it. I've got the RAM yesterday and tried importing the pool but like cyberjock said the very same result happened. So now I have reinstalled FreeNAS and created a new pool and starting the copy from the usb drives.. o_OTo bad I'd had to learn the hard way though. Thanks for the effort guys!
