Hi,

My current FreeNas box has 2 2TB drives which are mirrored and host a pool named DataVol1.

I was able to acquire 2 3 TB drives at no cost. I would like to sell my both of my 2TB drives and use the proceeds to towards two new 3TB drives. The catch is I have data on the DataVol1 pool which is hosted by the 2 2TB drives which I need to keep.

I'm not quite sure on how to proceed. Should I create a new pool and use ZFS send to move the data or can I extend the current pool even though the drives are different sizes? In the end I would like to have 1 pool with 2 mirrored vdevs with a total of 6TB of Storage.

Thanks in advance for any input!

This is covered in the Guide, Section 10.5.2. You can swap out your current disks, one at a time, resilvering after each replacement. Once the last member of the mirror completes resilvering, the vdev will automatically grow to 3 TB. Afterwards, you can extend your pool with another mirror vdev of 2x 3 TB disks to end up with a 6 TB pool.

Thank you for the response. I can't believe I missed this. Makes perfect sense.
