Best way to back up data before upgrading LSI firmware

I want to play it safe and do a full backup of my data before doing the LSI firmware upgrade.
If i buy a 5TB external drive, what is the best way to backup my data from freenas to it?

Obviously i plug it into the server and then what? snapshot, straight up cp?

Let me know your thoughts

I would create a snapshot and then use a replication task.

I ended up buying dropsync 3 and using that to back up to the external 5TB drive attached to another mac. Took 14 hours but ended up just fine.
