Dear All,
this thread is meant to share experience about the ASUS P12R-I Server Motherboard. It's a very nice Mini ITX motherboard which comes with ASUS ASMB10-iKVM the latest Baseboard Management Controller (BMC) from ASUS. Here below the problems I've encountered while configuring the BMC:
  • First installation: it is possible to use the ipmitool, e.g. establish connection and log-in (default user and password) to a shell, but nearly any command will fail!
    • It is mandatory to first log-in to the web GUI and change the "admin" and/or "Administator" password in order to send commands via ipmitool
  • Log-in to the Web GUI
    • be ware that you need to start the session as https because regular http is not accepted unless you change some settings which you can't do before the first log-in
  • Web GUI firewall settings: when blocking some of the connection, e.g. Setting>System Firewall>General Firewall Settings>Block All IPv6, you might experience instability of the Web GUI. What I've noticed is that the Remote Control>H5Viewer becomes unresponsive and sometimes you have to reset the BMC module to be able to operate again the Web GUI (e.g. ipmitool> mc reset cold)
    • Unfortunately even when removing the firewall rule the Web GUI still has the problem and I couldn't find a permanent fix
  • BMC factory reset is different from other controller (e.g. different from the Supermicro ones) and the command is not documented! Moreover the settings are persistent to the module so there's no battery you can remove to reset them: the only way is by using the proper raw command:
    • Factory reset of the ASMB10-iKVM: "ipmitool raw 0x32 0x66"

I'm still looking for a way to adjust the "user" level command to use "power commands". I will keep updating this thread but you're free to share your experience so that we can expand this.

Cheers,
Vortigern
