Hi all,

I have a Zpool with 2x3TB drives. I want to take my spare 2TB and add it as a basic data repository for transfers. That is, i don't want it in my Zpool, I want it on my freenas installation as a separate drive so I don't have to worry about the drive going down and causing my existing pool issues... I just want to use this one 2TB's space to transfer already backed-up data and share it throughout users in the house. Is this doable, or do all need drives added get extended into the pool ?

Nothing happens automatically. You must configure what you want to do with that drive. It's easy to create a separate pool with the single drive.

I've got an eSATA enclosure wired to my FreeNAS Mini. It has hot swap bays,
so I can install and remove my backup drives. (The backups are separate Pools
I import and export manully.) Works great for my use.
