Hey folks,

Putting together my 1st decent FreeNAS box, planned spec so far as follows:

Intel XEON 1230v2 CPU
SuperMicro X9SCL-F Mainboard
SuperMicro 32GB ECC RAM
11 x 3TB WD RED Disks RAID-Z3 + 1 cold spare in my desk drawer
M1015 HBA

I intend to join this box to a SAMBA4 domain, now after many weeks of reading on here the above seems like the correct spec hardware wise for reliability.

I'm a little worried that the RAM might not be enough however (going by the informal rule of 1GB of RAM for every TB of disk, plus 4GB for FreeNAS and another 4GB for AD/winbind) ... before I go and spend the $$$ I wanted to know if anyone is running a similar setup and managing OK with 32GB of RAM?

The box is going to serve approx 35 people ... graphic design company, file sizes varying from a few KB to a few hundred MB (text files, RAW images, etc)

Many thanks, any advice appreciated :)

I'd say you are probably okay. I have a slightly large pool in total TB and I get good results with 20GB of RAM, but mine is for 1 user.. me. I think you'll be okay though.
