i ma looking for suggestions on some 10Gb NICs. I bought a catalyst 4948 which I can hook up 2 of the X2 cards from Cisco. I am looking to hook up my freenas box and PC up to the slots. What is a decent but cheap NIC that works with freenas? I can run either copper or fiber.

Are the cheslio t420-cr cards decent? What kind of realistic speeds can I expect?

Sadly, you have mistakenly bought a switch that supports SFP ports when you needed a switch that support SFP+ ports. It happens. You will need to sell that (or return it) and buy a proper switch before you can do any 10G connectivity.

Here is a good primer on these things:

Once you get a switch, this type of network card should work for you:

or you could do a direct connection solution like this video illustrates:

I should have been more specific, I bought the catalyst 4948 10GE, not the vanilla 4948

Are there adapters in the 10 Gigabit Ethernet uplinks?

The SFP+ cards I linked to are still valid options, depending on the kind of connector you have in the switch.

I don't have any cards in the uplinks atm. Wanted to sort of the NICs so I knew what cards to buy. I have to look if they have an spf+ one. If not I will have to switch between different connectors

I’m going to assume this would work to go from x2 to spf+

I put a X2-10GB-SR in mine and just use an SC-LC cord from switch to desktop for now, cord wasn't expensive and I got the X2 modules off ebay used.
