Remove vdev from Pool without destroying pool

I have a Pool made up of sets vdevs, each vdev is a RaidZ1 of 4 disks. I ran into some problems awhile back and had to replace a few disks that FreeNAS was telling were failing. I replaced the disk in a given vdev without removing the old disk immediately. Now the disks that I replaced show...

    IronWolf/WD Red 8-bay limit

does this 8-bay limit mean that vdevs are limited to 8 drives, or that you can literally only put them in 8-drive bays? For example if I have a 12-bay Xyratex HB-1235, is it fine if I have 2 vdevs with 6 drives or 1x 8-drive vdev and 1x 4-drive vdev?

    RAIDz2 x 2 (ie RAID60) when and why?

Just started at a new studio, and I got to inherit the previous admins config decisions. (great :p) I was told we had 8 disks in RAIDz2, but when I did the math, we were sitting about about 1/2 the usable space that I was expecting to see. Due to the space restriction, the admin also disabled...

Expanding a RAIDZ with a set of different sized drives.

Hi! Yesterday, I expanded a RAIDZ volume composed by three drives of 10G each adding a vdev composed by another three drives. These drives have 20G each. I was surprised when I get 60G of storage. I've just lost a 33% because of parity. I've said, I was surprised because I thought that you...

    zfs receive and SLOG

Two questions - 1) Does 'zfs receive' utilize the ZIL and therefor a SLOG if you have one? 2) I have several 16 drive (3.5") chassis that I've inherited that I'll be using for backups for VM hosts. I'll be using zfs send/rec to get the data there. Would I be better off having two 8 drive...

    12 disk vdev

I have a backup server with 24 3TB 7200RPM disks. Its only job is to store ZFS snapshots from the main Freenas server, so I'd like to configure it as 2 12-drive Z2 vdevs to maximize space. Since it will only have one client, IOPS don't seem to be an issue (correct me if I'm wrong). I know the...

    Adding Additional Drives Post-Installation

Hello, I'm new to FreeNAS and will be setting mine up shortly, as the parts are on the way. I'm starting with 2 3tb WD Red Drives in Raid 1 (or RAIDZ1) for 3TB usable space with 1 disk redundancy. My question is, later on I want to add another set of 3TB Drives and have it be run in RAID 10 or...

    Volume expansion question

My original volume consisted of 12 3tb drives in raidz3. I had read that performance is degraded if the capacity is over 80%. So I bought another 12 3tb drives and used them to extend the volume. I did this using the GUI and extended the existing volume by adding the new 12 drives in a raidz3...

Combining different ashift values in the same pool

Hello, I have 4 vdevs of 6 4TB drives each that have been created with an ashift value of 9. The drives are native 512 byte block sized. I want to add to this pool 4 vdevs of 10 8TB drives. The new drives are native 4K block size. I understand there are performance issues when adding to...
