Will the current credentials work on new forum? I cannot login.
Nope, completely new, independent authentication system. Or OAuth via Google, Github, or whatever.

You can easily migrate the old users from Xenforo to Discourse, we should not create new users, for sure.
Yes, they could easily migrate the tens (if not hundreds) of thousands of posts too--but they've chosen not to.

Which tells a lot. To me it is like consciously deciding to shoot yourself in the foot. Community 101 ...

@Daisuke Well … it all depends on one‘s goals and values. Maybe it‘s all new.

I have to say, the feelings of a purge towards CORE and everything related (including the userbase) is real.

If there is pay I volunteer to be the spearhead of the Discourse migration!
Wasn't that announced yesterday?

The tag-based system is not well suited to managing a large number of posts. Especilally if the tags are unclear, insufficient and generally not well-tought before hand (like setiing up a ZFS pool geometry really…).
And the endless scrolling on long threads is underwhelming, to put it mildly. The other Discourse-based forum I'm registered in hasn't seen me in months…

Can we link/import from our old/existing accounts into the new? Not only thinking about karma, but also gameificated badges and such?

Now that 1st of April is over, this doesn't seem to be a joke at all (I was really thinking (and hoping) it would be) and therefore I'm quite surprised (to say the least) of this move because
  • It came completely unexpected (or maybe I missed something?)
    • iX mentions that the community of this forums is very important to them but the decision seems to have been taken without notifying (well a week, for such drastic change, I don't really call that a notification) or involving the community (which is not mandatory of course but would have been nice)
  • The way it's done feels like: all what has been existing is thrown away, regardless...
    • Of course it's good to do new stuff but you can not completely ignore what has been existing so far
    • The users are not migrated
    • Valuable data (like resources) are not migrated
    • Existing threads will be just closed (read only) in a week, eventually in the middle of a discussion and will have to start new again on the new forum

I find this move (not the move itself but rather the way it's been done) quite hard and, to be honest, a bit disrespecful towards the contribution forum members have been giving. This is a bit sad and I'm a bit sad...
For me this is not how I would care for my comunity (if I would have one... ).

Looking at the categories, they are very limited also, I presume new categories will be added?
I hope not--or at least, only very judiciously. One of the major problems with this forum--which apparently was seen to be insoluble, to the point of chucking it in the bin and replacing it with a new one--was the massive proliferation of subforums without apparent rhyme or reason, with the result that people had no clue where they should post. Several threads discussing that problem were mentioned up-thread.

You really shouldn't have been; this question was asked and answered within the first few posts of this thread. But I otherwise largely agree with you.

I opened my account, already hate the new layout and organisation with a vengeance. If free as in free beer and free as in open source was the driving factor, even Simple Machines would have been a better platform, IMHO.

Too late. The tagging should have fully thought upfront, and preferably left to mature before being deployed.
@nabsltd gave two examples of tags that are ambiguous. There is nothing for tagging networking issues, nothing about disk issues (short of going all the way to "Hardware"), nothing for inquiring about configuration in general (pool layout, design…).
There are probably many other omissions.
Either these are fixed, or the whole thing may end up in chaos. But fixing it one bit at a time will also land the new forum in chaos.

If the user interface is too much to learn, I will probably drop off. (I really am suffering from FBS, Fried Brain Syndrome, basically a little like burn out, but lasting a LONG time...)

I think they’re ok. Many other platforms are using discourse. It’s definitely not for everyone, but if that’s what IX decides, then that’s how it will be I guess.

I am heavily in favour of migrating all the threads and user info also, but oh well…

I welcome the change. Being familiar with Discourse with other forums I rather prefer their interface to Xenforo.

I know there is a legacy but it’s important to not lose the main objective in mind: exchange ideas and support each other. The rest will get sorted over time.
