OpenZFS Developer Summit 2013 Recap

}

November 25, 2013

On November 18-19, 2013, the OpenZFS Developer Summit was held at Delphix in San Francisco, California. The summit was attended by developers from many different companies who are currently building products using the ZFS file system. FreeNAS developers from iXsystems attended the Summit.

During the the first day of the Summit, many interesting presentations and lightning talks were given.

On the second day of the Summit, a Hackathon was held. iXsystems developers were active during the hackathon. Xin Li, iXsystems software engineer, extended the “zfs send” command so that it can produce status information in the top utility which is part of FreeNAS. This is very useful, since it allows FreeNAS administrators to monitor the status of “zfs send” when backing up their ZFS file systems to remote hosts. Xin implemented this feature during the hackathon, and gave one of the best demos at the end of the hackathon. Xin was able to do this due to his deep knowledge of ZFS and FreeBSD kernel code.

Craig Rodrigues, iXsystems software engineer, worked with a hackathon team focused on ZFS testing. During the hackathon, Craig looked at the Testrunner testsuite from the Illumos operating system, and ported a few of the ZFS tests to FreeNAS. One of the longer term goals of the OpenZFS project is to foster a community which maintains a suite of ZFS tests which any ZFS vendor can download and run on their product. This will help vendors test their ZFS-based products and make them more robust.

The OpenZFS community is vibrant and growing….and iXsystems is a key part of it!
