I have been using my FreeNAS box as a datastore for my ESXI hosts. Now I would like to access the storage directly from a Windows box as well.

In an attempt to connect one of my Windows boxes to my FreeNAS I configured the iSCSI initiator on the Windows box and have connected to the FreeNAS box. I cannot view the contents. I can see the storage as Disk1 in Disk Management. It shows as a healthy partition with 100% free space. The only option available for this partition in Disk Management is "delete volume".

Can this be done? Or is the file system incompatible with windows?

Thanks

Steve

Thanks Tekkie for the quick reply.

I was hoping for a different answer though......:)

My new backup software won't talk to my ESXI datastores. It wants a rescourse on the local machine.

Thanks again.

You could create a new volume on your Freenas and create a new iscsi extent/target for it. I have both ESXi datastores and windows disk-disk backup volumes on my Freenas box.
