Someone in this thread suggested that I enable VNET for my Plex jail.

(It didn't help my original issue and actually made things worse,
but that was likely because I wasn't setting things up correctly.)

It led me to look up VNETs and some other networking things.
I didn't find much in the way of layman's answers, and
I wondered if the forum could provide or link to some good answers.

• What end-applications do VNETs serve?
• In jails, enabling VNETS unlocks the Default IPV4 Route input bar:
what should this typically be?
- "none"?
- Same as Jail IPV4 IP?
- Unique IP?
- Server default gateway?
- User-created static route?

• What are static routes typically used for,
(or if I'm asking then I don't need to know?)
• What are VLANs typically used for?
(or if I'm asking then I don't need to know?)

.

I intend to use my NAS server at the least for:
• Additional storage
• PC backup
• Media distribution (Plex)
I intend to allow remote access.

With these applications in mind, (particularly the remote access aspect):
• Do my drives need to be encrypted? I assumed not.
• Is setting up HTTPS recommended and what will it serve?
If so, I believe I need to purchase a domain for this.
Are there any domain registrar features that are a must (don't cheap out on this)?
Any domain registrars which should be avoided at all costs?
• Is setting up a VPN recommended and what will it serve?
