According to the article, if I am reading it correctly, did I get lucky? (Emphasis added by me.)

This is causing MAJOR problems – such as the latest iteration of WD REDs (WDx0EFAX replacing WDx0EFRX) being unable to be used for rebuilding RAID[56] or ZFS RAIDZ sets

My drives have the model number: WD40EFRX

This seems to imply I'm safe from the possibility that my WD Red NAS Drives use SMR?

But wouldn't that someone have to return that unit with the matching serial?
But your heart slides in your pants when the online form says that the serial number is already known.
The original owner can prove his tenure in case of RMA - through a receipt or a photo. It's just unintended hassle you can avoid easily.

should I worry about something? Because it's really not very clear to me and maybe I misinterpreted the information I read on the smartmontools bug tracker here https://www.smartmontools.org/ticket/1313

Consensus seems to be that most SMR drives support TRIM. To check that you can in Linux use hdparm -I
I don't know of a similar command in FreeBSD.

The only real external clue that these drives are not what they should be is that they report themselves as "trim" capable - which a CMR drive shouldn't be able to do.

for a WD40EFAX

hdparm -I shows:
* Data Set Management TRIM supported (limit 10 blocks)
* Deterministic read ZEROs after TRIM

And to make matters worse, not all DM-SMR drives are doing this - for example Seagate ST3000DM-007 are DM-SMR but don't report TRIM capabilities

4TB WDs are CMR, currently only the new 2 and 6TB models are SMR, if/when they release a WD40EFAX with 256MB cache it will likely be SMR also.

Currently and AFAIK there only are 2 and 6TB SMR models from WD, both in the Blue and Red lines, I posted about these drives a few months ago:

4TB WDs are CMR, currently only the new 2 and 6TB models are SMR, if/when they release a WD40EFAX with 256MB cache it will likely be SMR also.
According to the Blocks and Files article and to geizhals.de 2TB, 4TB and 6TB EFAX drives are SMR drives. Starting with 8TB EFAX drives remain CMR atm.
