Wait what? A Free NAS server!

Hello All! I'm excited about getting my FreeNAS system fully operational.
I've been building up my home lab for the past few years. I'm a NAS noob and I've been eyeing them for quite some time. The ones I was looking at were way more than I wanted to spend. I joined a homelab forum and been seeing some NAS servers run on a raspberry PI. Started looking at how I can build it and I stumbled across FreeNAS from a YouTuber describing how I can use an old PC to build a NAS server. I've built my first FreeNAS vm on my DELL PE R820 running VMware 6.7. I still have a lot to learn, but this looks really promising.

Welcome! And do read the resource on how to be successful with FreeNAS on VMWare. In a nutshell: you want to pass a HBA through, so that FreeNAS has raw access to the disks.
