I'm looking at putting together a large capacity (in terms of storage space) FreeNAS home build. I have a 10Gb pipe at home but the main goal would be being able to saturate a 1Gb link (or two max). Mainly looking for backup capability with maybe some streaming.

This is what I'm thinking about:

Supermicro 6028U-E1CNR4T+ 12-Bay (4x NVMe) 3.5" Rackmount Server w/ X10DRU-i+
SuperMicro AOC-S3008L-L8E 8-Port 12Gb/s SAS
Bunch of ECC memory
Some CPUs (I suspect I have some suitable already)
And probably a bunch of He10 SAS drives

At the basic level I'm pretty confident in this build but what's concerning me is the NVME on the backplane extender (BPN-SAS3-826EL1-N4) especially if I want to use more than 8 SAS drives which I was planning to do.

Anyone have any concerns or comments with this setup?

At the least, I assume I can plug the 3008 HBA into the backplane and use all 12 SAS drives at full speed?

Any idea how the backplane operates if I want to use some NVME? Like, could I use 2 NVME and 10 SAS? I'm guessing I may need to keep things into banks of 4? If I want to use NVME, I'm guessing it might be better to find a different 4 port unit for just the NVME.

Thanks,
