Sudden loss of permissions

For about a year I successfully used my box (HP 8300 with i5 2400 3x2T Iron Wolfs and cheap SSD for boot) with freenas and everything was great.
A few days ago, however, all users lost access to all shares. I think SMB works fine because I see resources on the network under smb: // but permissions denied when I try to access them

When setting up SMB shares, I followed this guide: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p3wn0b_aXNw
Currently the FreeNAS version is 11.3-U3 but I have also tried earlier ones without success
So far I've tried without success:

  • strip all ACL and go according to the guide
  • importing the old configuration when everything was still working
  • Fresh FreeNAS installation and configuration from scratch
  • All above at once, i.e. fresh installation of FreeNAS strip ACL and import of working configuration

I even tried to go back to an earlier snapshot but still no luck
As a sanity check I tried to import zfs pool under Ubuntu and I made it available via samba, in this case everything worked fine
After changing to fresh FreeNAS install, permission denied again
As I am not an advanced BSD user I would be very grateful for tips on what I can do because it is certainly something obvious which I missed due to lack of experience.
